The conflation of photographs in the series of digital works entitled Overturned House and Overturned Series is meant to bring something new to images from concentration camps. The photos from Auschwitz, Ravensbruck and Sachsenhausen were taken by the artist, and yet are familiar to the public. The familiarity of images that are related to atrocious events creates a difficulty for the viewer, in that such photographs lose their ability to evoke a reaction and instead come to represent an event. Hughes’ conflations are intentionally dark and confusing in order to make the viewer work to perceive the individual images. The accompanying textual information provided reveals the site of each photo layer, offering the viewer a mental construct from which to view.
